DO DA WAVE

So this week is going to be on waves

and OMG! this wasnt a pun! we are actually going to be refrencing actual waves!!!!

now lets get to the important stuff. What is a wave Madeline? Well a wave transfers energy from one place to another. Some kinds of waves need to travel through a medium, and some can travel in space.
a medium is any kind of matter that can be disturbed by energy. Basically- some waves need matter to exist. Like sound waves. They need to travel through oxygen. So thats why sound doesnt travel in space- thers no oxygen.
so you may be wondering about actual waves at the moment. And let me tell you, waves dont actually move. its just energy traveling through them. sort of......

TYPES OF WAVES

There are ocean waves, but were are gonna talk about other kinds of waves. Mehancical and Electromagnetic waves to be exact.
An electromagnetic wave is a wave that is capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum (i.e., empty space). Electromagnetic waves are produced by the vibration of charged particles. Electromagnetic waves that are produced on the sun subsequently travel to Earth through the vacuum of outer space.

A mechanical wave is a wave that is not capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum.

Mechanical waves require a medium in order to transport their energy from one location to another. A sound wave is an example of a mechanical wave. Sound waves are incapable of traveling through a vacuum. Slinky waves, water waves, stadium waves, and jump rope waves are other examples of mechanical waves; each requires some medium in order to exist.

in the catagory of Electromagnetic, there is Transverse and Compressional waves.

A transverse wave is a wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction perpendicular to the direction that the wave moves.



A Compressional waves create sound waves by moving the molecules in the air, which in turn creates waves of noise. The more vibrations there are, the louder the sound is.




PARTS OF A WAVE

Once again, theres more to the picture. Im just going to show you what a wave looks like and show you the parts of a wave!! Calm down.....


So first im going to tell you the vocab then show you a picture all together.

The top of a wave is called the CREST
The bottom of a wave is called the TROUGH
The middle of a wave is called the AMPLITUDE
How you measure the amount of energy or the size of the wave is measured from crest to crest. or trough to trough. That is called the WAVELENGHT
    

Then there is frequency.

if you have a high frequency, then you have a a higher wave with shorter wavelengths.
if you have a low frequency, then you have a lower wave with a longer wavelenghts.

THE LAWS OF MOTION AND RUSSEL WILSON

So this week were gonna talk about Newtons three Laws of Motion.

FIRST LAW OF MOTION

       This law is also called the law of Inertia.
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon an unbalanced force. So if Richard Sherman (cornerback for Seattle Seahawks) is trying to block someone, he is pushing against someone. If he is exerting more force on the other person, He will be able to shove the other person away.


SECOND LAW OF MOTION

       The second law of motion explains F=m*a. Basically, the amount of force you have on an object depends on the mass and the acceleration. The heaver the object, the more force is needed to make the object move. So if Steven Hauschka (the kicker for the Seattle Seahawks) was kicking a field goal, he is using force to kick the football. Now if he was kicking a bowling ball, that would have a different outcome.
           
 THIRD LAW OF MOTION
       you may have heard of this law, its pretty famous. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that for every force there is a reaction force that is equal in size, but opposite in direction. That is to say that whenever an object pushes another object it gets pushed back in the opposite direction equally hard. So lets say that Russel Wilson (QB for Seattle Seahawks) decides not to make a pass, but to run the ball instead. He is running forward, but there is a wind resistance acting against him, making him go a little slower then he wants to.

HOLY CRAP IM SPINNING!!!!!!!!!

so ya. that's the topic for this week. and im gonna be half spazzing out while writing this because I hate the idea of going into space freaks me out!!!!!! you couldn't pay me 1,000,000 dollars to make me go into space. or go deep scuba diving. but that's a different explanation for a different time.
so you may be asking," well what is gravity Madeline?" well person i don't know, and never will know, gravity is not only a movie, but it is the force that pulls us to the Earth's core. there is a force that works against gravity, but you can look at my last post to find out what that is!
an example of gravity is the classic:
Your sitting under an apple tree, and suddenly, an apple falls onto your head! Gravity pulled the apple to the ground (but not before making a detour on your head).
Another way to look at gravity is this: imagine putting a bowling ball on a trampoline. it sinks in. now take a ping pong ball and place it where the trampoline starts to sink in. the ping pong ball will roll to the bowling ball in a circular motion.
now replace the bowling ball with the sun, and the ping pong ball with the Earth!
thus, gravity!!!
the theory is that an object will bend space and act as the large trampoline. that's called the theory o9f general relativity. and the genius who came up with that is:
 ALBERT EINSTEIN!!!


Galileo  also contributed a great deal to the mystery that was gravity.
what he did was, he took random objects and dropped them off a high building. he had people below the building tell him which one hit the ground first. Every time both objects hit the ground at the same time.

(not so)interesting fact- Galileo died on the exact day that Sir Isaac Newton was born. What a coincidence! or maybe it was fate.
Sir Isaac Newton was the one who figured out that gravity pulled things to the ground, b-by the way. (directioners: Megamind episode one- Louis telling Harry that he was in the band after asking him a question)

MASS VS. WEIGHT
you may think that mass is the same thing as weight. but its not.
Mass is how much space you take up. if you were to go to Mars with JB, your mass you be the same because you haven't changed ho much space you take up.
Weight is how gravity affects you. If you were are on Mars, your weight is going to be less based off Mars' gravitational pull.

Luke Skywalker ASDFGHJKL

Disclaimer- very punny.




Today were gonna talk about  FORCE. Yes I do mean the Force from Star Wars Because Yoda I am. Surprise Surprise!!
Well lets talk about force. And the fact that Luke Skywalker had a crush on his own sister for a while...
So im gonna give yall a few examples:
1. Lets say Luke is somehow on the Earth. Somehow. you all know what Gravity is (we've all seen the movie) Gravity is what keeps us on the ground. But if Gravity was the only force acting upon us, then we would be pulled into the Earth itself. There is a force working against Gravity at the same level, that keeps us on the very top of the Earth. that force is called Reaction Force.
2. Lets say Luke Skywalker (or Luke Hemmings) is driving a drone thing, (or a car) He is accelerating forward, but yet again, there is a  force acting against him. that force is wind resistance.

So based off those definitions, what do you think the definition of force is??

Force is a push or a pull!! basically. And you can use Newtons to measure force.
but of course, there is more kinds of forces, one being Net Force.
a Net Force is the overall force acting upon an object.






now were gonna talk about how thrust comes into this.

so thrust is to push something suddenly or violently  in a specified direction.
you hear the word thrust a lot when talking about airplanes. you need the right amount of it to get the plane in the air.

UNBALANCED AND BALANCED

there are balanced and unbalanced forces.  Forces are balanced when the forces pushing (or pulling) an object in one direction are the same size as the forces acting in the opposite direction .
An example of un-balanced forces would be like this:
Lets say Ashton Irwin and Calum Hood are on opposite sides of a door. Ashton pushes with 20N
and Calum pushes the door with 15N. Ashton would push the door to Calum's side because he was pushing with more Newtons than Calum.
An example of balanced forces would be like this:
Lets say Michael Clifford and Luke Hemmings (not Skywalker) are on opposite sides of a door. Michael pushes with 17N and Luke is pushing the door with 17N as well. the door would remain still because the force put on both sides are equal.

 CENTRIPETAL FORCE

Centripetal force is a force that makes a body follow a curved path: its direction is always orthogonal to the velocity of the body, toward the fixed point of the instantaneous center of curvature of the path
 Sort of like when a car turns severly to the left or right and you veer to the side. Sort of

ACCELERATION

So this post may be very punny. I think I may have a problem. (Directioners will understand)

Wer'e gonna talk about Acceleration. Acceleration is the change of velocity divided by the time it takes for the change to occur. There are three ways to accelerate. By speeding up, slowing down, and changing direction.
So lets say Liam Payne is going to the doctor. He needs to find out what is wrong with him.. He gets in the car and drives there. So when he steps on the petal (heavy metal) His car is accelerating.

So, he has to take a left turn to get into the doctor's office, so when his car is turning, his car is accelerating. So when he pulls into the parking lot, his car is slowing down. But it is still accelerating. But his car is accelerating negativly.

there is a not so easy way to calculate acceleration.

TYPEES OF ACCELERATION

there is negative acceleration, and positive acceleration. When you have negative acceleration, that means the acceleration is moving against the speed, slowing it down. When you have positive acceleration, the acceleration is going the same direction as the speed.(so i guess you would be the one that got away. Poor Niall)

yea yea i know you all hate math. We're not learning how to graph acceleration though, just how to understand a graph.


 
 
positive acceleration looks like a smiley face (becuase its happy, or positive)
negative acceleration looks like a frowny face(because its not happy, or negative)
 
 
see? that did'nt take that long to learn how to read a graph!! maybe even 5SECONDS(OF SUMMER)

Running, Slowing down, Wheezing, Stopping, Quitting, Going Home, Eating Nutella

       Hey guys! Before I begin, I know I haven't been on in 3 weeks. Well the first 2 weeks were Winter Break, and the third was because a pipe burst in my school, so we had the week off!!
       You may be wondering what the real topic for this week is. well I can say it is: Motion, Velocity, and Speed!!!!! are you putting 2 and 2 together? But first we're gonna talk about motion.

MOTION
 Motion is movement. you are always in movement. Even if you are standing still, you are still moving. Why? Because you have your heartbeat, blood pumping, you have to breathe!You have to blink!! you know, unless your Edward Cullen....

       There are different types of motion. Changing Position, Relative Motion, and Distance and Displacement. Changing position is exactly what it sounds like- you are changing position! If your about to jump your horse over a jump, you sit up in your saddle, put your center of gravity on your heels, and lean forward. then your horse jumps, which is also motion.



If you haven't noticed, you are always changing position. And based on your position, different things are in motion. If you are on a horse, about to turn a barrel, it may seem as if the people watching are shifting a lot. If you are one of the people watching, It looks like the horse and person are moving, which they are.

Another example would be if you were in a train. You look outside and it looks like trees are moving past you. Now lets say you are off the train, and it starts moving. Now it looks like the train is moving.




DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT



       OK were gonna take a minute to discuss this. You know what distance is right? Distance is the actual path you have taken from point A to point B. But Displacement is the actual distance between the two points.The displacement is a number. So for example, if you are doing the clover leaf pattern (western horseback riding)You start inside the gate. then you round the barrels, and you go back to the gate. Your displacement would be 0 because the starting point is 0 ft away from the finishing point.
 
 
SPEED        Now were gonna talk about speed.
What is speed? Well my friend, speed is the distance an object travels in a unit of time. Here in America, we use MPH, or miles per hour. So if I'm just chilling on my horse, walking next to a road in heavy traffic, lets say I'm going the same speed of a guy in a car going 15 MPH, how fast am I going? 15 MPH.

there is also Instantaneous and Average Speed. Instantaneous Speed is the speed you are going at that moment. And Average Speed can be found with this formula:
speed= distance

         time
VELOCITY
      

       What is velocity? Velocity is the rate of change of the position of an object. And there's another formula to figure out Velocity!! Velocity= distance divided by time traveled.

Sir Isaac Newton

      Hey guys- this week we're talking about Sir Issac Newton. You may have heard of him before. He was an English Physicist, Astronomer,  Mathematician, and a Natural Philosopher.   

      Sir Isaac Newton was born in 1643 in the town of Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth on January 4th .(that's in England BTW) Before he was born, his father had passed away, and shortly after birth, his mum left him to marry some 63 year old guy..... Um that's kind of awkward. To make things worse, he was born so early, no body thought he would survive! Sort of like Liam Payne.. So after his mum left him, he was sent to live with his Maternal Grandmother. Fun Fun. Then when he was around the age of seventeen, his mother took him out of school to become a farmer!! But after a bit of convincing, the headmaster of the school persuaded his mother to let him go back to school.
      So long story short, he goes enrolled at the Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. He studied there for the next four years until it was shut down in 1665 because of the plague. So he goes home to study even more. that's where the famous apple comes in! Even though he wasn't actually hit in the head by the apple, he still saw it fall to the ground. As you all know, he figures out that the weird force that keeps us on the ground- GRAVITY!

I am not going to go into all the details but after the discovery- he created a book. I'm not even going to try to spell it so im just going to give you the shortened version! : "The Principia" which is also the name of the college my mum went to.....
He then makes his now- famous Three Laws of Motion. they are:
1.  AN OBJECT AT REST WILL REMAIN AT REST UNLESS ACTED ON BY AN UNBALANCED FORCE. AN OBJECT IN MOTION WILL REMAIN IN MOTION WITH THE SAME SPEED AND THE SAME DIRECTION UNLESS ACTED UPON BY AN UNBALANCED FORCE.
2. ACCELERATION IS PRODUCED WHEN A FORCE ACTS ON A MASS. THE GREATER MASS, THE GREATER AMOUNT OF FORCE NEEDED.
3.  FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE RE-ACTION.
 So you may think he's pretty satisfied with himself to not make anymore discoveries or stuff- but NOOOO. he decided he wanted to make all of us in the present day and age suffer by creating calculus!!!! I mean really?!?!?!?!?!?!?

then after THAT- he goes and studies the properties of light. He refracts light through a prism to find out that white is made up of a wide array of colors. And eventually the album cover for Pink Floyd.

He then created a new kind of telescope- the reflecting telescope. that allowed the light to be in a much higher quality- because earlier telescopes had not been able to capture all light.
Not long after that- Newton received his Nighthood. he received it not for his science accomplishments- but as a reward for his work as the "Master of the Royal Mint" in London. He completely reformed the English currency adn punished counterfeiters severely.
THEN (yes he wins something else too...) he is elected president of the Royal Society in 1703. He was re-elected each year until he died in 1727.  When he died- he was the first scientist to be buried in Westminster Abbey. His laws are still used today and without them- who knows where we would be!!
