E-CIGARETTES- THE GATEWAY TO ADDICTION?

Hey guys, its Madeline! So for the last half week or so, guess where ive been? Washington D.C.! It was really fun and interesting. We went with a program called Close-Up and I met some great people when I was there. So this week our blog assignment was on a current event, so I saw this and said, hey, we were just in the Capitol, why not do something that the government is getting involved with!

So the article was talking about e-cigarettes and what they're doing. the company e-cigarettes are trying to target younger audiences to smoke their product by making it seem cool and not taste that bad. They're creating flavored cigarettes. ones that appeal to the public to make smoking seem cooler.they are also reaching out to minors through social media accounts, but some companies restrict minors from giving them likes or retweets.
Have you seen an e-cigarette ad? If not, you may very soon. The congressional report found that among companies that would share financial information, one had increased its spending on advertising for vaping products by 64 percent between 2012 and 2013. Another two companies said they tripled their spending last year.
A 1970 law bans cigarette ads on U.S. radio and TV shows. The idea was to limit a child’s access to such ads, but sadly, this law does not apply to ads for vaping products.
this is an e- cigarette vaping ad:

some states have made the selling of  e-cigarettes illeagal to minors (17 and under). there are currently 28 states that have passed this law. some of those states are New York, Illinois and California.

HEALTH CONCERNS

Another thing with these product is health.
The FDA requires labels warning of health risks on all cigarette packaging. Makers of vaping products do not have to carry such warnings. Still, eight of the nine surveyed companies say they do include some type of warning. Many include a statement saying that vaping products contain nicotine. The labels also state that the State of California says this chemical can cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Such labels usually also warn that pregnant women should not vape.

Other warning labels say “this product does not treat, diagnose or cure any disease.” Or they can state that nicotine may pose risks to people with heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Such warnings are not likely to scare off teens. The risks would appear largely for pregnant women and older people with chronic disease. unless your a mother at age seventeen... #teenpregnancy

Michael Jackson has the best way to explain smoking:
