Heat Transfer

hey guys! this week were talking about heat!!

no not that Heat! I'm a Hawks fan....
But on a more serious note, were talking about the other heat.

ya! that's the one!!!
heat is a big part of our life and is very important to us humans. As you (should) know, we are warm bodied creatures and operate properly when warm.
there are three ways to conduct heat. there is Conduction, Convection, and Radiation.

Conduction is transfer of heat through direct contact. In the picture above, the fire is heating up the pot, and the hear eventually travels up to the handle, therefore burning you.
Then there's Convection. Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of atoms or molecules from one part of a material to another.
think of it like this: you have a pot of boiling water over a stove. now the water at the bottom heats up, and since heat rises, it pushes down the cold water so it can heat up and thus the cycle of convection! As shown below.
and last but not least, there's radiation. Radiation occurs when energy is transferred by electromagnetic waves. So lets say you're sitting in front of a bonfire.  you can feel the heat right? That's because of Radiation. The heat waves are being tansferred from the fireplace to you!

 CONDUCTORS

*sigh* not that kind of conductor!! I'm talking about a conductor of heat you silly munchkins!
A conductor of heat is pretty much moves heat energy between two points.Have you ever wondered why a blanket keeps you warm? well the answer is simple: Blankets are insulators. it's job is to prevent the transfer of heat from one side of it through the other side. It can work for both heat and cold. if you wrap an ice block in a blanket, it will stay cold. foam, feathers, and fur are very poor conductors of heat. Why? Because they trap air, which is also a poor conductor of heat. They hold surfaces away from one another, so its stops Conduction.

here's a question- if you want to heat a room evenly, where should you place a heater- on the floor or near the ceiling? ill pause for a second to let ya'll think through it.

  jk i don't have a snack bar... i wish i did though!

Ok. if you said "on the floor!! that's common sense!!!!" then your correct!!!!! you see, heat and hot air rises. so if you placed the heater on a high shelf, you would be heating the ceiling. which would be great if you were eating on the ceiling with Mary Poppins!

before i leave ya'll, here are three weird, and completely random facts about heat.
1. the flapping of 1,000 bees wings generates 7 watts of heat
2. The highest temperature ever recorded in the shade was 57.8C (136F) in Libya on September 13 1922.
3. The skin of a polar bear is black, which helps it to absorb more of the heat from the sun.

hey guise- i hope you enjoyed my blog post this week. it was fun to make and i hope it was fun to read!!
(special thanks to my cousin for helping me some with making it!!)

Energy

hey guys! this lovely week, we will be talking about energy!
not just any kind of energy though, were gonna talk about potential and kinetic energy!
You may think the only way to get energy is by drinking Pumkin Spice Latte's and Monster, but thats actually not the case! crazy right! there is energy is in everything! there is potential energy and kinetic energy.

POTENTIAL ENERGY-
Potential energy is energy based off an objects position or condition. for example, if there's a huge boulder on the edge of a giant cliff, it's potentail energy. it's about to fall off the cliff becasue that's the laws of gravity. but that's a different topic for a different week. Another example is, if you were Katniss Everdeen,(SPOILER ALERT) about to shoot  at a bag of apples to explode things, and you had your arrow drawn back, the arrow has potential energy becasue it is about to be shot.

KINETIC ENERGY-
Kinetic energy is an object in motion. for example, if you were on a rollercoaster, and you were going as fast as you could, that fast energy is Kinetic. Mass and speed come into play with Kinetic energy.
the more mass an object has, the more Kinetic energy it has. the faster you are going, more Kinetic energy in that object. Lets go back to the Katniss example- OK Katniss lets go of the arrow and it flies at the sack of apples. they topple onto the ground and the mines explode. When she let go of the arrow, that no longer is Potential, it was turned into KInetic energy. Now Kinetic energy can be transferred to one object to another. When the apples toppled to the ground adn hit the mines, they exploded. the explosion is now kinetic energy.

Now that you have a very good idea of what Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy are, lets put it into a real life situation.
ok there is a toy truck and a bouncy ball sitting on the edge of a counter. (both have potential energy) if you push them off the counter, it is transferred into Kinetic energy. But which one has more? The bouncy ball, or the toy truck? If you said the toy truck, your absoultly correct. The toy truck has more kinetic energy because it has a larger mass than the bouncy ball. And like i said earlier, the more mass, the more energy!!

(pretend its smaller)

bouncy ball

as you can see- the truck has more mass than the bouncy ball and it can move faster therefore it has more Kinetic energy and more Potential energy.

the changing points of matter (or a teenage girl!)

omg. i just want to start this post off by saying how sorry I am. I haven't been on in 2 weeks! That is crazy. I really hope y'all will forgive me for that. we weren't assigned a topic for the last 2 weeks because its part of our state curriculum to talk about abnormal science. we talked about, Ghosts, Crop-circles( aliens), and telepathic animals.

Anyway... this week we're going to be talking about matter. but more specifically- the changing states of matter.
there are three different states of matter.

LIQUID

SOLID

GAS &

PLASMA

(we arent going to talk about plasma, I just wanted to list it. (plasma is lightning))

matter changes states with the temperature. If you add heat to ice, it melts. if you decrease the temperature to water, it freezes. every thing or all matter has its own unique melting and freezing point. even though the physical form has changed, the chemical makeup is still the same.

a good example for all of this is water. It's the most commonly used example for matter changing states.

Water can be found as:
 ICE
 STEAM &
 H2O

There's this thing, it's called heat of fusion, and it's pretty cool.  it's the amount of heat required to convert a unit mass of a solid at its melting point into a liquid without an increase in temperature. told you- awesome.

lets talk about when things change states.
Like I stated earlier, everything has it's own melting point and freezing point.
Ice's melting point is:0 degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Water's freezing point is also that^^ I know it sounds confusing, but that's just the way things are.

Now lets talk about some more terms!! (BTW I'm about 1/2 way done!)

there's Condensation, Sublimation, and Disposition.

Condensation- Condensation is basically a liquid (lets use water) that collects droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it. You can see an example of condensation on a glass of cold water on a hot day, or after it has rained and its very humid outside. as shown below, you could write stuff on the glass.

Sublimatation-  a change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid. two words. Dry. Ice. Ice that skips the liquid state, and goes directly to the gaseous state.

Disposition- its the exact opposite of Sublimatation. it is a gas, turning directly into a solid.

so that summarizes the changing points of matter, or a teenage girl. Sometimes they're stable (solid) sometimes they're liquid (crying-duh) and sometimes they're a gas (pissed of and angry)
